When the gunships had expended their ammunition and were withdrawing, SGT Foote was wounded and unable to move. He continued to place suppressive fire on the advancing enemy until his position was overtaken and he was mortally wounded. For his actions that day, SGT Foote was awarded the Silver Star and the Purple Heart.  SGT Walter Bruce Foote was 21 years old.
