Sergeant Foote distinguished himself while serving as an Advisor to a company sized Vietnamese force. Upon insertion into his designated landing zone he reported receiving small arms fire. Almost immediately the enemy assaulted the LZ. Sergeant Foote remained on the landing zone requesting and adjusting helicopter gunship strikes. When the gunships had expended their ammunition and were withdrawing, SGT Foote was wounded and unable to move. He continued to place suppressive fire on the advancing enemy until his position was overtaken and he was mortally wounded. For his actions that day, SGT Foote was awarded the Silver Star and the Purple Heart. SGT Walter Bruce Foote was 21 years old.
